Physical effort transforms

The mind and spirit

The mind and spirit

The martial artist doesn’t train just because it helps her keep those love handles under control. She doesn’t train just because she wants to be able to fend off an attacker one day. She trains because of the mental and spiritual effects of training. One martial artist said simply, “When I train, I feel closer to God.” This probably comes from being able to empty her mind of everyday problems and concerns and focus instead on how happy and open she feels as she works out. Others point out that their physical efforts empower them. They feel less afraid and more confident. They also feel mentally sharper when they work out, as their overall energy level increases. The relationship between mind, body and spirit is like a tripod. If one leg is shorter or longer than the others (or missing altogether), the tripod is unbalanced and tips over. Thus, physical effort is a necessary part of a balanced, centered life. It doesn’t have to be martial arts, although that’s always been my recommendation. It can be any physical activity you do on a regular basis.
